Karmil Ballet Fund

My name is Karmil Suliman. I was born a stateless refugee in Syria where I began my ballet studies at the age of 9 at Enana Dance Theater in Damascus. In 2021 I was awarded a scholarship to study at the National Academy of Dance in Rome, Italy, after winning the gold medal in the Ballet Beyond Borders International Ballet Competition.

Since I was little, dancing has been my dream. It has carried me through the dark times of war and the loss of many loved ones. I am honored to have been given the opportunity to study here in Europe, and I want to take full advantage of it to grow and learn in the hopes of helping my family and one day show the world a different side of Syria. I hope to use my skills to help rebuild my country and help other Syrian artists achieve their dreams.

Starting in September 2022, I was awarded a scholarship for three years to continue my studies at Dance Area in Geneva, Switzerland. This is an amazing opportunity that I am very grateful for. I hope it will be a major step forward toward helping me achieve my goals.

Unfortunately, due to my family’s financial difficulties and a demanding study schedule, it will be difficult for me to generate the necessary income to live. I am asking for your help.

This scholarship covers tuition fees only. I am looking to raise enough money to cover my living costs. The rent in Geneva costs approx CHF 650-750 ($675-$785) per month, and I expect to need CHF 500 ($525) per month for food and transportation. I also hope to raise an additional CHF 500 ($525) to fund my travel to Switzerland and the costs of purchasing items I need for my apartment. Any extra donations I will use to travel to auditions in Europe. I hope to raise CHF 10000 ($10500) if possible.

As a special thank you to all of my supporters I will be inviting all of you to an exclusive viewing online of a new piece I am choreographing. This new choreography that I will dance will be followed by an interview with Ballet Rising director Casey Herd and we will discuss my inspiration behind the piece as well as a Q&A. I will be releasing more details on it as soon as possible.

I am hoping to raise enough money to last for one year, and then after that I will try to find any job to work and get money for the second and the third year. At this very moment, I am very excited for dancing to become my future job and I am working hard to push myself to improve and to make the most of the opportunities that present themselves for me in my career.
